How the Mission Act of 2018 Benefits Veterans

Family Integrative Medicine explains how Mission Act of 2018 benefits veterans

Did you know that the Veterans Healthcare Administration (VHA) is the largest integrated health care delivery system in the United States? It serves our nation’s more than 9 million veterans from over 1,255 health care facilities across the country.

For decades, the VA has delivered care with support from local community providers, which is defined as healthcare provided outside of the VA by a medical practice such as Family Integrative Medicine in Central Florida. This typically occurs when the VA is unable to provide care that targets a veteran’s specific needs, such as if the veteran needs advanced medical care and meets eligibility requirements. A leader in person-center care, Family Integrative Medicine often welcomes new patients referred by the VA to the highly skilled team at our medical clinics for specialized treatment. These visits are provided on behalf of, and paid for, by the VA.

In 2018, the VA Mission Act, also known as the VA Maintaining Systems and Strengthening Integrated Outside Networks Act, passed with the aim to make dramatic improvements to how veterans received community care. In these cases, the law aimed at providing veterans with greater choice over their medical care by addressing in-network and non-VA health care issues, average driving and wait times, access to walk-in care, prescription drug protocols and more.

The Mission Act of 2018 outlined a series of vast changes to accomplish this, including:

  • Consolidating community care programs into a single program that provides more access to care and is much easier to navigate
  • Expanding eligibility for the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for family caregivers
  • Strengthening the VA’s ability to recruit and retain the best medical providers
  • Strengthening the VA’s infrastructure to provide better service to veterans

Connecting Veterans with Quality Care Providers

Essentially, after the VA’s community care programs grew in number and became complicated to access and administer, the Mission Act of 2018 provided the solution through the Veterans Affairs Community Care Network (VA CCN). It consolidated VA’s numerous community care programs, including Veterans Choice, into a more simple program that is easier for veterans and their families to navigate. As the VA continues to cope with the national shortage of health care professionals, especially physicians and nurses, the VA CCN helps fill this gap.

Veterans who live far from VA medical facilities can now seek care and find coverage through this extended network. This also simplified the process of providing care to veterans for community providers like Family Integrative Medicine, thanks to new IT systems, better communications with the VA, and more timely payments.

It’s especially helpful for veterans with challenging diagnoses, where the caliber of specialty care can directly impact recovery times. Through the VA CCN, veterans can be referred to facilities like Family Integrative Medicine where they can obtain specialized treatment from medical staff with prestigious training and decades of experience.
